At the doorsill of the century, the agricultural world has heard resounding debates about Frankenstein foods.  Frankenstein food is the term coined to Genetically Modified Organism (GMOs) by the British press when Prince Charles of Great Britain aired his opposition over the same. Pro Frankenstein Foods are saying that it is but a way of enhancing the productivity of plants by genetically modifying it building components while its critics are arguing that the food produce from GMOs are harmful that they are calling for a worldwide ban even on experimentation attempts sought to be undertaken.

Frankenstein foods are referred to as the produce of plants or animals whose genetics are engineered by way of introducing foreign genes to them. These genes are inserted to generate increase in the production value of the recipient. As an upshot, it either makes the recipient resistant to diseases and pests or improves the quality of the produce. Frankenstein foods have increased nutritional content, longer time to deteriorate and have enhanced appearance.

The recipient living organisms undergo a process of engineering which gives them individuality that is made to transfer from one organism to another.  The engineering process then identifies a single gene that controls the traits and after the process of identification, it is isolated and transferred to one or more chromosome of the cell of a recipient. After having been transferred successfully, it is then placed into the cell of the recipient with the use of various methods such as gene gun shooting or some bacteria transfer.

The cell transfer is made through random insertion of the gene in the receptor cell. The cells are then allowed to reach a certain level of growth before specially engineered ones are segregated from those which grow normally. After successful insertion, the recipient goes through the normal breeding process of propagation. Looking at the said process, it can be gleaned that there could never be any potential threat to human life by using Frankenstein foods. But be as it may, it is still important to inquire further about its effect on people, animals and most importantly the environment.

We can expect that public oppositions on Frankenstein foods are likely to continue. While this article showed that GMOs could potentially generate substantial benefits in terms of the produce’s appearance and nutritional value, among others, it is still best to open its possible aftereffects to public discussion. In fostering an open and inclusive public discussion, it is best to only consider facts and information which can be validated scientifically and set aside political opinions regarding the matter.
